1. The World Health Care
In this introductory lesson, students learn about the daily activities in US medical facilities, responsibilities of medical coders and billers, and various career opportunities in medical coding and billing.
2. Introduction to Medical Terminology Word Parts
Students learn root words, prefixes, suffixes, and how to derive word parts from medical terms. Includes practice with medical dictionaries.
3. Medical Terminology Dividing and Combining Terms
Students learn to divide and combine difficult medical words to understand and describe diagnoses and procedures.
4. Medical Terminology: Abbreviations, Symbols, and Special Terms
This lesson helps students recognize common medical abbreviations, symbols, and plural words, including eponyms, acronyms, homophones, and antonyms.
5. Documenting Medical Records
Focuses on the role of medical records in coding, recognizing documentation formats, and managing medical records efficiently.
6. Medical Ethics
Students learn about ethics, compliance, fraud, abuse, confidentiality, insurance audits, and legal concepts in medical coding.
7. Diagnostic Coding
Introduction to coding history and the ICD-10-CM system. Students learn to identify main terms and describe coding pathways.
8. CPT
CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) maintained by the American Medical Association. Describes medical, surgical, and diagnostic services for communication among professionals.
9. HCPCS
Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System based on AMA's CPT. Standardized codes used for health insurance claims, products, and services.
